Mr. Jones had a few day's holiday, so he said, "I'm going to go to the mountains by train." He put on his best clothes, took a small bag, went to the station and got into the train. He had a beautiful hat, and he often put his head out of the window during the trip and looked at the mountains.

But the wind pulled his hat off. Mr. Jones quickly took his old bag and threw that out of the window too. The other people in the carriage laughed.

"Is your bag going to bring your beautiful hat back? They asked. "No", mar jones answered,

"But there's a name and an address on the bag. Someone's going to find both of them near each other, and he's going to send me the bag and the hat."

Mr. Robinson never went to a dentist, because he was afraid:' But then his teeth began hurting a lot, and he went to a dentist. The dentist did a lot of work in his mouth for a long time. On the last day Mr. Robinson said to him, 'How much is all this work going to cost?' The dentist said, 'Twenty-five pounds,' but he did not ask him for the money.

After a month Mr. Robinson phoned the dentist and said, 'You haven't asked me for any money for your work last month.'

'Oh,' the dentist answered, 'I never ask a gentleman for money.'

'Then how do you live?' Mr. Robinson asked.

'Most gentlemen pay me quickly,' the dentist said, 'but some don't. I wait for my money for two months, and then I say, "That man isn't a gentleman," and then I ask him for my money.

They considered that form of punishment out of date, immoral, and unsuitable for Christian States. In the opinion of some of them the death penalty ought to be replaced everywhere by imprisonment for life. "I don't agree with you," said their host the banker. "I have not tried either the death penalty or imprisonment for life, but if one may judge a priori, the death penalty is more moral and more humane than imprisonment for life. Capital punishment kills a man at once, but lifelong imprisonment kills him slowly. Which executioner is the more humane, he who kills you in a few minutes or he who drags the life out of you in the course of many years?"

یک شب دلگیر پاییزی بود. بانکدار در اتاق کارش بالا و پائین می رفت و مهمانی یی را به خاطر می آورد که پانزده سال پیش در چنین شبی برگزار کرده بود. آدم های باهوش بسیاری در مهمانی حضور داشتند و گفتگوهای جالبی در گرفته بود. در خلال گفتگوها در باره مجازات مرگ صحبت کردند. اکثر مهمان ها که میانشان افراد روشنفکر و روزنامه نگار بسیار بودند اعدام را محکوم کردند. آنها این نوع مجازات را منسوخ، غیر اخلاقی و مغایر با مسیحیت می دانستند. به نظر عده ای باید حبس ابد در همه جا جایگزین اعدام می شد.بانکدار؛ میزبان آنها گفت: «من با شما موافق نیستم. من نه اعدام و نه حبس ابد را تجربه کرده ام اما اگر قرار بر پیش داوری باشد من اعدام را بسیار اخلاقی تر و انسانی تر از حبس ابد می دانم. اعدام بلافاصله می کشد اما حبس ابد به تدریج. کدام جلاد انسانی تر عمل می کند. آنکه شما را در عرض چند دقیقه می کشد یا آنکه طی سال های متمادی جانتان را می گیرد؟

W: I really wanted to take Chemistry 221 with you, but the class is full.

من میخواستم درس شیمی ٢٢١ را با شما بردارم ولی ظرفیت کلاس تکمیل است.

M: Is it a required course for you?

آیا این درس برای شما جزء دروس اجباری است؟

W: Yes, it is. I’m majoring in chemistry.

M: I presume you have the prerequisites, then?

W: Oh, yes of course.

M: In that case, you can enroll in the class.

W: But the class is full. Don’t I have to put my name on a waiting list or anything?

Last week I went to the theater, the play was very interesting. I didn’t enjoy it! A couple was sitting behind me, talking loudly. I couldn’t hear the actors; so I looked at them angrily. They didn’t pay any attention.
“I can’t hear a word” I said angrily.” it’s none of your business,” he said.” this is a private conversation!”

General Pershing

General Pershing was a famous American officer. He was in the American army, and fought in Europe in the First World War.

After he died, some people in his home town wanted to remember him, so they' put up a big statue of him on a horse.

There was a school near the statue, and some of the boys passed it every day on their way to school and again on their way home.

After a few months some of them began to say, 'Good morning, Pershing', whenever they passed the statue, and soon all the boys at the school were doing this.

One Saturday one of the smallest of these boys was walking to the shops with his mother when he passed the statue. He said, 'Good morning, Pershing' to it, but then he stopped and said to his mother, 'I like Pershing very much, Ma, but who's that funny man on his back?'
